Since March 27th 2007…

I made music, and mistakes, and more mistakes, and more music – two things I think (and hope) I’ll make for the rest of my life.

I returned home from India, stopping in Singapore and Vancouver along the way.  I miss India, now, although I love being able to feel invisible.
I worked as a rafting guide.  It was harder and more responsibility than I thought it would be; one day the raft in front of me flipped and someone died.  I was in shock.  After a few days I continued to work, constantly telling myself to be confident, relax, and focus.  I was fired 5 days before my contract – so were the other two rookies.  Rather than bonding us, the “incident” led to… really odd human behavior.
I finished up my majors at SFU (music and geography).  I am so grateful for the friends and professors I learned from those five years – SFU was my Hogwarts, my Rushmore, and I really loved it.
I worked as a fullblown (ha ha) musician this summer – research, composing, teaching, and performing.  That was the life.
I broke my wrist longboarding… got a kiss and some surgery.  I loved the kiss even though I knew it wouldn’t last, I got surgery on the wrist, got to play pipes the next day, and it’s still healing well.
I competed with the band of my dreams though I got cut from the Worlds 3 days prior - and a good decision - the band won.  Next year.

So now I have started my masters in ethnomusicology at UW.  New home, new city, new scene.  Tons of reading, a little writing, and maybe not as much performing and composing as I’d like.  Still, I get to sing in a choir, play piano when I please, learn music from South Africa, and nerd out on all sorts of wonderful topics in music.  I’m taking tap dancing, climbing sometimes, playing ultimate sometimes, and traveling up to Vancouver for band, rehearsals, teaching, and other gigs.  I really like the new friends I’ve made so far.

I love music: the experience, emotion, expression, meditation, creativity, innovation, nostalgia, movement, language, connections, ecstacy, the play with time.

Well, now it’s back to writing.  I see I can add media (music!?) in wordpress now… maybe I’ll make use of that some day.  Thanks for listening, interweb.  Much love.
